.If the work is to be treated as a Classic, fromthe Confucian perspective, it is necessary to find within itsome fundamental indication of the moral fiber of human-kind and a pattern for the ways in which people should live.Such a pattern, from the Confucian point of view, reflects themoral authority of the Way of T ien, as interpreted by the sagesof antiquity. The Classic or Book of Rites is generally considered a col-lection of several works. The Li chi is the best known of these.CONFUCIAN POETRYThe Shih ching, or Classic or Book of Poetry, is the most famouscollection of poetry in all of Chinese literature. It is one of the FiveClassics. When asked whether the poetry is Confucian, many peoplewill respond that it includes many themes and topics, and focuseslittle on moral teachings directly. From the Confucian point of view, onthe other hand, the collection is regarded as brilliant poetry preciselybecause it does exemplify Confucian teachings and values.Confuciushimself commented that there was not a single word in the workthat is anything other than morally good. There are, of course, manypoems that would seem to have little or nothing to do with moralgoodness, but even in those cases, Confucians have argued thatthey are allusions of moral lessons. The following may be seen as anexample of the type of poem found in the work that would be judgedto display moral value for the Confucians:1Cold is the north wind, the snow falls thick. If you are kind and love metake my hand and we ll go together. You are modest, you are slow, but oh, we must hurry!Confucian Scripture 37In general, these texts focus upon rituals and their importanceto the maintenance of order for society and the individual. Some of the writings are very detailed descriptions of partic-ular rites; others discuss the broader meaning of ritual as acomponent of the order of the universe. In each case, themeaning of ritual is believed to reflect the moral structure ofthe universe in general. These are rituals set in the context ofthe authority of Heaven, as described by the ancient sages.Thisrelation of ritual to the sages of antiquity suggests the degreeto which such rites become a fulfillment or enactment of theorder of the Way of Heaven, and therefore are very religious. The Ch un-ch iu, or, as it is usually called, the Spring andAutumn Annals, is a record of events from the small state of2Fierce is the north wind, the snow falls fast.If you are kind and love me,take my hand and we ll go home together. You are modest, you are slow, but oh, we must hurry!3Nothing redder than the fox, nothing blacker than the crow.If you are kind and love me,take my hand and we ll ride together. You are modest, you are slow, but oh, we must hurry!*Whatever its original meaning, a poem like this one was, to Confucians,a statement of moral concern and commitment. In this case, the poemis not just a simple love song as it appears to be, but instead echoes thecries of people suffering from political oppression who are encouragingeach other to seek political asylum in a state where human relations aregoverned according to moral ways.* William Theodore de Bary and Irene Bloom, comp., Sources of Chinese Tradition, 2nd ed.,vol.1, New York: Columbia University Press, 1999, p.40.38 CONFUCIANISMLu, the native land of Confucius, from 722 to 479 B.C.Thestyle of writing is very terse, which led later Confucians tocompose several major commentaries that have subsequentlyaccompanied the work. Why would a chronicle of events froma single state over a very limited period of time be raised tothe status of one of the select Classics? The answer lies in thesignificance attributed to the fact that it is a chronicle of thestate in which Confucius was born and raised. If one viewshistory as a display of the moral nature of the Way of T ien, then the events in the state of Lu take on an even greatersignificance, simply because of the importance of Confuciusto Chinese history. The work becomes the sacred history ofthe state of Lu.Finally, there are references to a sixth Classic, the Classic ofMusic [ Pobierz całość w formacie PDF ]
